Upgrade for your Contractor-Grade home lighting, cheap or free, that's good for me.

Faux Rice Paper and Gold Lantern... for less than $10

I bought a gold, metal basket at Michael's a week ago.  Because it was on sale (woo!) and because I've been eyeing something to replace the contractor light fixture we have in our kitchen.

Here is the monster.

solution for problem lights hack fix pinterest
Icky lights affectionately called "boob" lights.
Can you see it?

In 30 minutes I had the glass part of the fixture off and covered the inside of the metal basket using the method below.  Please please only do this with LED bulbs and be careful about your safety and the safety of your house.  Here's how I achieved the look.

Step 1: Cut waxed paper in half length-wise, then fold each half length-wise.  Like this.

Step 2: Fold to make a V shape.

Step 3: Fold back over the original piece so it looks like an awareness ribbon.

Step 4: Cut a bottom to lay down and glue to your basket.  Lay the folded shapes over each other to make a pattern.

Step 5: Check periodically to make sure that your folded pattern design looks good from the outside of the basket...this is the side that will be visible!

Step 6: Line the inside of your folded shapes with one last layer of waxed paper to cover any gaps.  Tape.

Step 7: Hang.  I used gold craft wire threaded around the base of the light fixture. Only try this with LED Bulbs so your paper doesn't melt or have any danger of becoming a fire hazard.

Do you have a nasty contractor light lurking in your home?  What have you done to fix it?

Kids Chalk Animals -- Create your own cartoon

Make your own animal outlines. Take pictures and write a simple story together (one sentence a picture) of their animals' adventures. Kids love this. Super cheap and super fun summer activity.

Have your kid lay down (if you can catch them) and do a creative chalk drawing around their little body.  Have them contribute ideas.  Notice the grr on Anastasia's face.

Stella is a monster.  Fitting.

We made our collection into a nice "We love you, have a nice day, Aunt Kim" message for her to see as she pulls out of her garage.

Life Hack: Making your own latte foam

How to make your own latte foam
1.  Get thee a French Press
2.  Brew coffee that is 3 times stronger than your usual cup.  If you have the chance to make espresso in a machine or on the stove, now's the time.
2.  Heat up milk until it's piping hot (don't burn yourself, please).  A microwave works if you heat in 45 second increments, stirring in between.  If heating on the stove, stir continuously. There's nothing grosser than skin on the top of your milk (eew)
Sidebar:  I learned the heating milk thing from a Barista friend of mine...heating milk breaks it down and makes it sweeter and more apt to foam.
3.  Pour milk into French Press (leaving enough room for foam to form on the top...about 4-6 inches.)  You don't want sticky, warm milk spills
4.  Pump the French Press plunger up and down continuously for 1-2 minutes.  You will be so pumped to see foam form.
5.  Gently pour the milk into your coffee or espresso and spoon the foam into the top.
Poof!  Life hack.  Game changed.

How to make churro popcorn

How to make the most delicious, buttery, cinnamony goodness you have ever tasted:

1.  Pop 1 bag Orville redenbacher tender white popcorn

2.  Completely open top of bag, but do not remove popcorn.

3.  Have 1/4 cup cinnamon sugar prepared.  Sprinkle on top layer of popcorn, completely covering it.  Pinch the sides of the bag together and shake the bag while popcorn is still hot.  A new layer of white popcorn comes to the top, repeat.

Buttery churro goodness. I. Did. Not. Come. Up. For. Air.
